What is GUM?

Genitourinary Medicine (GUM) is a Group 1 medical specialty that involves the investigation, diagnosis and management of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV. The speciality also includes the provision of standard and emergency contraception, in addition to training in General Internal Medicine (GIM). As a GUM physician, you will have the opportunity to make a positive and long-lasting impact on patient’s lives. You will form part of a community of professionals that love GUM and are passionate about improving the sexual health of the UK.

Whilst sexual health and HIV care is predominantly delivered in an outpatient setting, GUM clinicians also work across inpatient care settings in HIV and GIM. They contribute to on-call rotas and spend some time working in GIM. GUM clinicians have a considerable public health role, in the early detection, effective treatment and prevention of onward transmission of STIs and blood borne viruses.

GUM incorporates clinical skills and knowledge from a wide variety of areas, and higher specialty trainees in GUM will gain experience in:

  • STIs
  • HIV
  • Viral Hepatitis
  • Genital Dermatology
  • Adolescent Health
  • LGBTQ+ Health
  • Contraception and Reproductive Health
  • Sexual Trauma and Assault
  • Sexual Function and Wellbeing / Psychosexual Medicine
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Microbiology
  • Health inequalities
